Excellence in Rural Journalism Award 2017

The Excellence in Rural Journalism Award is one of Queensland’s highest profile and most prestigious Awards for rural and regional journalists. The Award, in celebrating the talents of outstanding individual journalists’, seeks to raise the profile of our Award winners and the profile of the profession in general. The Awards are open to all 2016-2017 financial members of the Rural Press Club of Queensland.

Award Categories

  • PRINT – for best story published in a newspaper or magazine. (text only)
  • RADIO – for best piece produced primarily for broadcast on radio.
  • TELEVISION – for best piece produced primarily for television.
  • ONLINE (Multimedia) – for the best multimedia piece produced primarily for online use.

The Rural Journalism overall winner and runner-up will be selected from the finalists of each of the four categories. The Excellence in Rural Journalism overall winner receives $5,000 toward professional development & international networking opportunities through attending the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) Annual Congress which will be held in South Africa in April 2017. The runner-up will receive $1,000 toward costs to attend the 2016 IFAJ Congress.

In addition, the Print category winner will be nominated as the Queensland finalist in the Australian Star Prize for Rural Writing. The Radio, Television & Online (multimedia) finalists will be nominated as the Queensland finalists in the Australian Star Prize for Rural Broadcasting. These national awards are run by the Australian Council of Agricultural Journalists (www.acaj.org.au).

An individual journalist or a team may enter. In the case of a group entry, one individual must take the lead and submit the application.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Be a story of broad agricultural interest.
  • Be a single report or a series of reports on the same issue or topic, comprising of no more than five reports as a single entry
  • Have been broadcast/published between 1 January 2016 – 31 December 2016.
  • Be accompanied by a background statement of a maximum of 200 words, outlining the circumstances in which the story was produced, together with the impact or feedback generated.
  • One entry only in each category for each journalist or team.

Excellence in Rural Photography Award 2017

The Excellence in Rural Photography Award recognises & encourages excellence in photographers who capture the people, places and production in rural Queensland. The Awards are open to all 2016-2017 financial members of the Rural Press Club of Queensland.

Award Categories

  • PEOPLE
  • LANDSCAPE & NATURE
  • PRODUCTION – including photos of machinery or technical aspects of farming, plant and animal production, bio- energy, etc.

The overall winner will be selected from the three category finalists and will receive a cash prize of $1,000. Each category finalist will automatically become the Queensland finalist in the Australian Star Prize for Rural Photography.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Represent an agricultural subject and fit within the three relevant categories.
  • Be a single photograph or a series of photographs on one subject or event, comprising of no more that five photographs as a single entry
  • May be either colour or black and white.
  • Have been published as editorial material in a printed or electronic publication from the period 1 January 2016 – 31 December 2016.
  • Be accompanied by a background statement of a maximum of 200 words outlining the circumstances in which the photo was taken, together with impact or feedback generated.
  • One entry only in each category for each photographer.

Rural Social Media Award 2017

The Rural Social Media Award recognises the contribution of Social Media in telling rural stories. This category is open to self-publishers (not exclusively journalists) who seek to raise the profile of Queensland agriculture to a broader audience through social media. The overall winner will receive a cash prize of $500. The Awards are open to all 2016-2017 financial members of the Rural Press Club of Queensland.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Created your own blog or profile on a social media platform such as Facebook or Twitter to promote positive stories about Queensland agriculture or raised important issues about life in rural and regional Queensland.
  • Have published material on your blog or social media site during period 1 January 2016 - 31 December 2016
  • Be accompanied by a background statement of a maximum of 200 words outlining the circumstances in which the blog or social media profile was created, together with impact or feedback generated.
