The Rural Press Club’s 2016 Excellence in Rural Photography competition was strongly contested again this year, with entries coming from across regional Queensland over three categories - People, Production and Landscape.

The overall winner for the photography award is the Cairns-based freelance photographer Brian Cassey, for his piece “Beef Farmers” published in the Courier Mail.

Judges’ comments - A timeless image of country fortitude. The holding of the hands is so understated. A classic well-composed image. All the right elements are there in the right weight. You can’t not love this couple. The false horizon anchors the image.

Brian also took out the production category of the Awards for his photo of a ‘Banana Farmer’.

Judges’ comments - The picture displays very good use of photographic language, well capturing the farmer in his intimate environment. The photo was published in the Courier Mail.
