Innovation, Investment and Olympic Legacy on Show at Darling Downs Ag Day Out

Around 150 guests from across Queensland’s agriculture sector gathered at the Toowoomba Showgrounds last Thursday for the Darling Downs Ag Innovation Day Out - a showcase of regional innovation, agribusiness leadership and future opportunity for the state’s agricultural sector.

Hosted by the Queensland Rural Press Club in partnership with Mort & Co, the event combined three major experiences across one full day, beginning with the official opening of Mort & Co’s new fertiliser manufacturing facility at Grassdale near Dalby.

Guests travelled by courtesy bus from the Toowoomba Showgrounds for an exclusive morning tour of the Grassdale feedlot precinct before attending the official opening of the company’s new fertiliser operation - a major investment in manure-based fertiliser technology aimed at improving soil health and reducing reliance on synthetic inputs.

Attendees later returned to the Toowoomba Showgrounds for a Rural Press Club luncheon in the Glenvale Room, where they heard from leading agribusiness figures Charlie Mort and Grant Statton.

Charlie Mort reflected on the company’s growth over the past two decades, having transformed Mort & Co from a $1.7 million operation into a diversified agribusiness with annual turnover exceeding $400 million. He spoke about the importance of innovation and long-term investment in ensuring the continued strength of Queensland’s beef and agricultural industries.

Grant Statton shared insights into Mort & Co Fertilisers’ vision for the future of organic and biological fertilisers, highlighting the company’s $15 million investment in technology designed to support more sustainable agricultural production systems.

The day concluded with a special presentation from the Royal Agricultural Society of Queensland, offering guests an exclusive preview of the future 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian and Para-Equestrian venue at the Toowoomba Showgrounds.

RASQ President Shane Charles shared insights into the once-in-a-generation project as preparations also began for the 161st Royal Toowoomba Show.

The event highlighted not only the strength and innovation of Queensland agriculture, but also the growing role regional communities will play on the national and international stage in the years ahead.

The Queensland Rural Press Club thank all guests who attended, along with event partner Mort & Co and the Royal Agricultural Society of Queensland, for helping deliver a memorable and successful day on the Darling Downs.
